Why Are There Rust Marks On My Resin Bound Driveway?

Some aggregates used in resin driveways are more prone to developing rust spots and marks when exposed to the elements of British weather. This has caused concern for resin driveway owners, who wonder why these rust spots appear and how they can be treated.

The most common reason for resin driveways to show rusting is the presence of metal trapped within the aggregates, such as Iron Ore. When these metal elements come into contact with the wet British weather, rusting will start to surface. This rusting will appear in sporadic spots and can become more noticeable over time.

Another reason rust spots may appear is when a metal object is left on the resin driveway surface, causing corrosion over time when it becomes wet.

This process of rust spotting is known as oxidation. It is difficult to avoid with certain resin bound aggregates that naturally contain iron ore, so you won't be the only resin driveway customer to face this issue.

When iron ore reacts with oxygen, it forms a chemical called hydrated iron oxide. Subsequently, when water reacts with this chemical, rust spots appear on the surface.
